Translation & Localisation FR/EN

ENS Rules & Regulations

Client: The Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS-PSL) is the top ranked grande école in France, which equates to an Ivy League establishment in the Anglo-Saxon educational framework. While this is a quintessentially French institution, it welcomes a range of international students and therefore needs to provide them with quality English-language documentation. (Website)

Project specifications: The project consisted in translating 3 text documents from French to UK English, which made up the rules and regulations of the establishment. This involved significant work in terminology management, and updating a bilingual glossary to create an official French-English dictionary for future reference. Ensuring consistent terminology over roughly 20,000 words made this project a worthy challenge, especially given that the ENS is a historic institution with unique, culturally-specific language that does not overlap neatly with US or UK institutions. Working with TRADOS Studio helped me keep track of this terminology and consistently update my files throughout the project to match glossary terms.

Skills required:

  • French-English (UK) translation

  • Knowledge of terminology specific to higher education and institutional governance

  • Translation Memory creation and maintenance (TRADOS)

  • Glossary creation and maintenance (TRADOS) in collaboration with ENS communications team

Fontaine O Livres: La fresque du livre

Client: Fontaine O Livres is a professional network, a nursery for entrepreneurs, and a training centre dedicated to the book sector. Their mission combines skill training and project support for various players in the field. In recent years, the association has pulled focus on environmental issues related to eco-design and virtuous cycles in book production. (Website)

Project specifications: La Fresque du Livre (The Book Fresk) is a fascinating educational card game where each illustrated card presents one link in the chain of book production, from writing and design to printing, distribution, and recycling for example. Working from InDesign files, the workflow involved collaborating with the graphic designer to ensure file compatibility after processing in TRADOS Studio.

Skills required:

  • French-English (UK) translation

  • Knowledge of book publishing and bookselling terminology

  • Translation Memory creation and maintenance (TRADOS)

  • Adobe InDesign file management

  • Collaboration with design team

Renault Retail Group

Client: Renault Retail Group (RRG) is a major French automotive manufacturer.

Project specifications: I have been working with RRG across a number of projects for the translation of their training content into UK English. Structured in slides (MS Powerpoint), these documents blend text and image in a wide range of layouts (multiple choice questionnaires, learning activities, situation scenarios). These files are sometimes used as teaching materials during on-site training, or serve as a functional storyboard for graphic design teams to create e-learning solutions. Client-specific terminology is critical in this sector, so it takes experience and a great deal of research to ensure compliant, high-quality translations.

Skills required:

  • Mastery of French-English (UK) translation

  • Knowledge of training, sales, marketing, and EV terminology in the automobile sector

  • Translation Memory creation and maintenance (TRADOS)

  • MS PowerPoint file management and QA
